1948 Hamilton Brandon
Serviced December 2022, American made manual wind movement, very good silver dial with 18k gold applied numerals. Distinctive swing lugs, hand polished 10k gold filled bezel and case back, NOS crown, brand new genuine leather strap with gold tone buckle, original acrylic crystal, alloy mainspring.
Made for four years from 1948 through 1951, the Hamilton Brandon was the first in the CLD ("sealed") lineup of watches. The CLD line of watches came with a series of gaskets that were designed to keep moisture and dust out of the case and were marketed as "weatherproof". This line predates the "waterproof" watches that were introduced by Hamilton in the late 1950's. While later versions of the Brandon came with fixed lugs, only the 1948 edition featured the swing lugs found on this example. The serial number on the movement is from 1947, suggesting that this was a very early watch out of the Hamilton factory. This watch comes with an American made Hamilton caliber 980 manual wind movement with 17 jewels. The silver dial has applied 18k gold numerals. The painted Hamilton logo, minute track, and sub seconds register is excellent. There is honest patina across the dial. The hands appear to be original with light patina. The original thick acrylic crystal was polished clean and clear of any major defects during the full service December 2022. The 10k gold filled bezel and case back have been hand polished and show some fine scratching. There is marring on the case back under the lugs where there was an attempt to open the watch. There is plate wear on the edge of the case back as well as on the flexible lugs. The crown is a correct CLD NOS for the Brandon. The watch comes ready to wear on an unworn genuine leather brown two piece strap with gold tone buckle. The 980 caliber manual wind movement was serviced December 2022 and is running well and currently performing at +/- 20 seconds per day.
