About the Thin-o-matic T-402
By the late 1950s, Hamilton was pushing hard toward thinner automatic movements, and the Thin-o-matic T-402 was one of the first expressions of that effort, produced from 1959 through 1961. Part of the Thin-o-matic family, it shares the slender round case profile and sweep seconds that defined the line's appeal during that era. The T-402 runs on one of three related calibers depending on production date: the 620, 663, or 666, all 17-jewel automatics housed in a 10k yellow Gold Filled case measuring 10mm thick. The dial is gold with a silver finish, Arabic numerals, and a pearled chapter track, giving it a clean, dressy look that was clearly aimed at the executive market.
Dial variation is where things get genuinely interesting on the T-402. Hamilton's Special Markets division used this case for presentation and corporate award watches, so examples turn up with custom dials, including a documented Budweiser Beer logo version and others featuring a textured spiral finish that doesn't appear in the standard catalog. Even the base dial has a tactile quality worth looking at under good light. A solid-gold numeral variant with pearled track also exists and commands a bit more collector attention than the standard embossed version.

What to Look For
| Dial | Look closely at the dial finish under angled light. The standard version has a textured spiral detail that's easy to miss in flat lighting. Check whether the numerals are the solid 14k gold version or the standard embossed type, as these are meaningfully different. Any logo or custom text is a sign this came through Hamilton's Special Markets division, which isn't a flaw, but it does affect how the watch is cataloged and valued. |
| Crystal | The T-402 is a thin watch, so crystal fit matters more than usual. Look for chips at the edge where the crystal meets the bezel, and check that the crystal sits flush with no separation from the bezel seat. Replacement crystals exist but fit can vary. |
| Movement | If the watch has the caliber 620 micro-rotor, listen carefully when winding and wearing. The micro-rotor can ride up its axle over time and contact the case back, producing a faint grinding or ticking sound. This is fixable but requires someone who knows these movements. The Movement
The T-402 was produced with three closely related movements: the caliber 620, 663, and 666, each a 17-jewel automatic. The 620 is a micro-rotor design, meaning the winding weight is integrated into the movement plane rather than sitting on top, which is how Hamilton achieved the slim profile. The 663 and 666 are conventional automatic movements sharing a similar architecture. All three are capable daily runners when properly serviced, though each has its own quirks that reward a watchmaker who knows them well.
